Eastbourne - Victorian Beginings

The beautiful coastal town of Eastbourne, is a wonderful site showing how the Victorians used to plan a seaside resort.  During the 19th century Eastbourne was a collection of hamlets.  It was these hamlets that gave rise to the parts of Eastbourne still known today.  You will recognize many of these names such as Meads, Oldtown, Southbourne (Grove Road).  It was towards the end of the 19th century that the two mainland owning families, the Cavendish and the Gilbertsones started to orchestrate performing of the place we may recognize today as Eastbourne.

Eastbourne - The development of Tourism

In 1849 the railway first came to Eastbourne and this brought with it the first signs of tourism.  One of the main roads in Eastbourne is called terminus Road, this is where you see today many of their high street banks.  In 1849 this was just a muddy track to the sea.  During 1850 This Rd was developed to encourage visitors to the seaside.

Eastbourne - Post World War 11

Eastbourne has continued to grow both in size and population post-World War II.  Newhouse and developments were agreed to help cope with the ever increasing population of Eastbourne.  You recognize many of these areas today.  The developments of Oldtown, Langney and Hamden Park the first before.  In 1963 the Congress was opened to cater for an ever-increasing conference trade and also this provided the town with its fourth theatre.  In 1993 the sovereign Harbour marina started its development.

Eastbourne - Further changes 2007 -2011

In 2007 Eastbourne town council decided to open a new water sports centre to help provide water sport facilities throughout the year.  Eastbourne is also developing an extreme sports annual meeting, a cultural centre and are currently scheduled to spend around £100 million redeveloping the town centre by 2011.
