Polegate a brief history
A short description on the History of Polegate
Polegate
Polegate is a small town that lies between Eastbourne and the market town of Hailsham. The main road to Polegate from Pevensey Castle is an old Roman road.
You can still see the old Polegate windmill which was built in 1870. The windmill was built to replace the old Mill is situated on the South Downs. Thanks to the work enthusiasts you are still able to visit the windmill during the summer months. The Polegate Wind Mill will seem strangely placed in Polegate as is now situated in the middle of a housing estate.
An old railway line built in 1849 to link the town of Polegate to Hailsham was a single line. This railway line has now been converted to a country walk and runs between Polegate, Hailsham and all the way to Heathfield.
There is now has a new secondary line enabling trains from Eastbourne directed into Polegate and also links between Polegate and London. You can also catch the Polegate train to Brighton and a train leaves Polegate to Hastings making Polegate ideal for those wishing to commute.
The original village of Polegate is now very much considered a suburb of Eastbourne but those who live in Polegate still enjoy their own high street and collection of unusual shops.
